For this simple facelift, the dual problems of storage and sight lines were solved with open shelves that also frame the view between rooms. Closing off redundant doorways created better traffic patterns and allowed the addition of two closets. All the existing furniture and some of the old bookcases were reused; the worn rug was recycled into throw pillows. We swapped silvery grey for tired beige and painted the backs of shelves red for punch.
