As part of the larger gut renovation for Aari and Barbara, a closet in their son Simon’s bedroom was converted into a powder room. Like other elements that had been lovingly assembled in anticipation of this project, a collection of tiles had been hand painted by dozens of friends at a pottery shop party for Simon. There were a lot of tiles, but not enough to complete even this small bathroom. The solution? The colorful tiles became a border in a punchy black and white scheme.
Above: Rows of oversized porcelain tiles clad the walls, while bands of penny tiles stripe up the floor. The vanity is custom made to fit the tiny width. The hand painted tiles are held in a border of black liner tiles.

Simon’s trundle bed is surrounded by all the art he loves, including a portrait of his parents – painted by a friend who reimagines them as the girl scouts they used to be.
